Description
Gentleman's large and highly impressive original Antique Swiss /English 'Winegartens Railway Regulator' 7 jewel pocket watch with beautiful ivory porcelain dial in a very chunky 18 size, silver nickel, highly polished (mirror finish) hermetic case with locomotive to back cover.
Has been much loved and extremely well taken care of, looks to have had very little use, perhaps only high days and holidays - her condition certainly reflects this.
(This is the very best one of these I have had the pleasure of owning).
Full working order and is an excellent timekeeper with plenty of room on the regulator (which is sat correctly in the central position) for any further fine tuning.
Fully checked and serviced by my highly experienced watchmaker and is guaranteed to be 100% authentic - a timepiece to grace any collection!
Dial:-
Impressive and distinctive, high gloss, 'snowflake' white porcelain dial in mint condition - absolutely no hairlines, marks or nibbles.
Clearly signed in black very fancy script with the famous retailers name; WINEGARTENS 145, Bishopsgate LONDON E.C.2
and signed in arched black script to base; SWISS MADE.
Big black Roman numerals with black minute markers, bolder black 5 minute markers and 'diamond' shaped black 15 minute markers to chapter ring.
Large sub dial with black Arabic numbers and black seconds chapters.
Finely cut, original very bright blued steel spade and whip hands and original blued steel arrow tip seconds hand all in lovely straight order.
Original very thick sharp and un-worn bevel edge glass (not acrylic) in clear and bright condition with just one or two extremely tiny little surface scratches showing under eyeglass only.
Case:-
The highly polished and very chunky silver nickel large 18 size hermetic case (5.5cm diameter / 7cm from top of bow to base, 1.5cm depth) is heavy (has a pleasing solid feel in the hand and total watch weight is a hefty 120.4 grams), robust and in wonderful condition (please excuse the reflections/dark shadows in the pictures, was extremely difficult to photograph) - all edges are crisp and totally un-worn, absolutely no indentations or wear and just a few very light little overall surface scratches commensurate with age and use in her 100+ years service.
These robust silver nickel cases where favoured by the Railway men for their strength and durability.
All covers (both inside and out) still retain their original, high gloss, mirror finish.
The front bezel and back cover screw on and off correctly (hermetic), closing tightly (early form of waterproofing) and I have taken the liberty of oiling the threads for years of continued smooth operation.
Has an attractive slightly raised coin edge to the front bezel making for an easy grip.
The back cover carries to centre (within an oval shaped cartouche) a totally un-worn decoration of a large locomotive thundering down the tracks with smoke billowing and is clearly stamped in arched script; *WINEGARTEN'S RAILWAY REGULATOR*.
Numbered to the inside; 1409475 4750 and carries four old service marks - one looks to be dated; 47 (1947) and two are dated; 50 (1950).
(Interestingly the first two service marks are done in the same hand and the other two are done in a different hand - wonder if the original owner only look the watch for service to his two favourite repairers).
Movement:-
The stem wound and set 7 ruby jewelled, 3/4 nickel plate Swiss Cortebert lever movement (which still retains its original dust ring) is in superb clean and bright order and as mentioned above has just been checked/serviced by my highly experienced watch maker.
Carries very attractive 'wavy' engine turning to the top and bottom plates - always a sign of quality.
Has a solid bi-arm balance wheel with brass balance screws and two brass meantime screws (for precision timing), steel flat balance spring which is true, in the round and 'breathing' well, yellow gold chaton settings, traditional Cortebert 'dog leg' regulator (easily recognisable by its slightly bent shape), ruby end stone, ruby pallet jewels, attractive 'swirl' engine turning to the mainspring and ratchet barrel covers and original, matching steel case screws.
Stamped clearly on the top plates in black arched script; SWISS MADE 7 JEWELS CAL 534 and is beautifully stamped around the mainspring barrel cover; * WINEGARTENS *
Numbered to the bottom plate (underneath the dial); 3407535.
Balance action is tremendous in all positions (could not be any better) and is keeping excellent time with a sure, strong positive action - runs like a train.
Winds extremely smoothly and fully (do not be afraid to fully wind, over-winding is the greatest horological myth!)
Hand set operates smoothly and correctly - the pull up/push down action is very firm and true.
Lovely original large crisp and totally un-worn flat topped 'onion' crown.
Original firm, un-worn correct Winegartens distinctive bow which looks to have never been suspended on a watch chain.
Appraisal:-
A very handsome and highly impressive Gentleman's Swiss Railway type timepiece which as mentioned earlier was much loved and proudly cared for by the original owner - she will make a perfect gift and a heirloom to be enjoyed by your future generations!
Certainly one for the collector.
Ready to wear or display.
Will be delivered in a new presentation box as shown and be very securely and safely packed.
