Description
Poul Cadovius (1911–2011)
‘Royal System’ Wall Unit, c.1960
Manufactured by Cado, Denmark
Stamped Made in Denmark
Teak
A beautifully composed example of Poul Cadovius’s iconic Royal System modular shelving, one of the most influential furniture designs of the mid-20th century. Designed in 1948 and produced through the 1960s by Cado, this wall-mounted unit exemplifies the Danish Modern principles of refined craftsmanship, functional clarity, and elegant material use.
The present configuration comprises four vertical wall supports with a combination of adjustable shelves, a three-drawer chest, and a slide-front storage cabinet. Constructed in rich, well-figured teak with fine joinery, the system is fully modular—allowing the user to reconfigure elements to suit interior needs.
Cadovius’s Royal System was revolutionary in its time: it liberated storage from the floor, creating a sense of lightness and flexibility while maintaining warm, natural materiality. The design embodies the balance between architectural logic and organic beauty that defines post-war Scandinavian design.
This example is notable for its even patina and uniform colouration throughout, with clean, minimal lines accentuated by the subtle grain of the teak. The drawers slide smoothly, and the slide-front cabinet reveals fitted shelf storage space.
Stamped Made in Denmark to the back of a number of the shelves.
A timeless and versatile piece of Danish design, representing both the innovation and craftsmanship that made Poul Cadovius a defining figure of modern furniture history.
