Size: Saucer 11.8 cm wide. Coffee cup 6 cm tall, 6.3 cm across rim. Condition: Excellent condition, no chips cracks or restoration, very slight wear to gilt on rim of cup. This is a lovely example of the Aesthetic period and the "Japoniste" craze which swept through Europe in the third quarter of the 19th century (mainly as a result of the reopening of Japan to trade in 1858) The cup, has a very distinctive bamboo type handle and is decorated with a bird on a branch which is an Aesthetic period motif. The saucer is decorated with Japanese items including a fan and a parasol. The decoration is transfer printed, hand coloured before firing, and then later decorated with gilt which is fired on. The clay body of the piece is earthenware. Powell Bishop and Stonier were based in the pottery town of Stoke on Trent, home to other great manufacturers such as Wedgwood and Minton. This cup and saucer are particularly well marked, having among other things a diamond PODR mark, which records the registered patent and pinpoints the date of the design to 6th December 1880. The other marks are the P B & S "Oriental Ivory" mark showing a Chinaman under a parasol, which indicates the type of ware, the P B & S Conway mark which is the pattern, and a painter's numerical mark.
