Description
ate Qing Dynasty Chinese Porcelain Scholar’s Seal Block with Iron-Red Horses & “Ma Dao Cheng Gong” Inscription – 19th Century
China, Late Qing Period, Circa 1880–1900
🐎 Auspicious Horse Decoration – “Ma Dao Cheng Gong”
A finely painted late 19th century Chinese porcelain scholar’s seal-form block of cube shape, decorated in vibrant iron-red enamel with spirited horses in motion, enhanced with delicate tonal shading.
The top panel bears the auspicious four-character idiom:
马到成功 — “Success Arrives at Once.”
This traditional phrase has, for centuries, symbolised swift achievement, prosperity, and advancement in career or scholarly pursuits. The horse in Chinese culture represents strength, endurance, rank, and momentum — making this a highly desirable symbolic motif.
✒️ Poetic Calligraphy
One side is inscribed with an elegant vertical poem in traditional script, praising artistic refinement and harmonious colouring, concluding with a comparison to fine jade — long regarded as the most esteemed material in Chinese culture.
The integration of painting, poetry, and inscription reflects the literati tradition of the Qing scholar’s studio, where objects were appreciated for both aesthetic and intellectual qualities.
🏛️ Scholar’s Studio Object
Of well-balanced cubic form, this piece would have served as a scholar’s desk ornament or symbolic seal block within a refined interior.
The upper panel is framed by a green key-fret (leiwen) border, a classical motif symbolising continuity and longevity.
The sides bear the characters “御制” (“Made by Imperial Order”), an honorific inscription commonly found on quality Qing decorative wares.
Compact yet visually strong, it displays attractively and carries pleasing weight in the hand.
