Description
Extremely rare George Iii Malacca wood and 18ct gold walking stick or cane that dates to 1788. The pommel is fully hallmarked 18ct London 1788 with the makers mark for John Hutson who is register between 1784 and 1799. It includes the Kings duty mark to the far right which is a little worn but can still be seen with an eye glass. 18ct cylindrical pommel with hand chiselled decoration of swags of flowers and foliage with ringed detail around the base just above the hallmark. The top is blank, the cartouche hasn't been used. Matching wrist strap holes lined around the edge again in 18ct gold. Mounted on a Malacca shaft with it's original brass and steel ferrule to the base. Truely remarkable for a cane of this age. Please contact us with any questions you may have.
measurements
It measures 89 cm 35 inches in length, the pommel is 2.4 cm 15/16 inch wide and 1 5/8 inches 4 cm long.
declaration
Shires Antiques has clarified that the Rare 1788 George III Walking Stick Cane 18ct Gold Pommel Malacca Shaft (LA425214) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being 1788
condition
It's in excellent condition but with some very minor signs of age and use as you'd expect at 234 years old. Minor surface marks on the gold but no holes, splits or repairs. Amazing when you think how soft 18ct gold is. One wrist hole surround has a small section missing sown in close up in the pictures. The grade one Malacca shaft is excellent with no damage or repairs. Being a fibrous wood it's strong but light weight.
