Description
Rare 1837 Pattern royal standard silk flag. This silk royal standard is one of the earlier ones dating between 1837 to 1850 with its original wear. Still has its vibrant colours, and has been housed in this modern frame.the flag has been professionally framed. With an oak colour added to the frame. The flag is housed on a red background. There are original holes to the flag which can be seen in the photographs. Overall a great decorative item. And one off piece of English/ British history. Small piece of history about this flag. The Royal Arms: 1 and 4 quarter, gules, three lions passant guardant in pale or (England); 2) or, a lion rampant within a double tressure flory, counter-flory gules (Scotland); 3) azure, a harp or, stringed argent (Ireland). These arms were adopted on the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837. That year, the arms of Hanover were removed from the Royal Standard because the kingdom applied Salic Law (the throne could not pass through the female line), and Victoria's uncle, Ernest Duke of Cumberland therefore succeeded as its ruler.
