A most rare and attractive oak and pollard oak longcase clock, with rotating ball moonphase, by Daniel Seddon, Frodsham c.1745. The good quality quarter sawn oak case of excellent proportions. The domed topped hood with arched fret, side viewing windows and turned free standing pillars terminating with giltwood capitals. The long trunk door with shaped top, crossbanded in pollard oak with boxwood and ebony inlay, which is repeated on the trunk edge and also on the base, which sits on small bracket feet. The beautifully executed 12.5" arched brass dial with ringed winding holes, calendar aperture, recessed subsidiary seconds dial and shaped fully signed nameplate cartouche to the matted centre, within a silvered Roman numeral dutch banded chapter ring with foliate half hour markers and Arabic five minutes. Wheat-ear engraved outer border with finely cast gilded brass four seasons spandrels to the corners. The arch with recessed central revolving ball moon, calibrated for the lunar month to the equator, flanked by gilded brass dolphin spandrels, beneath wheat-ear engraved border. The fully restored, fine quality eight day duration movement, united by four beautifully turned knopped pillars, excellent quality wheel work and continuous moon drive. Countwheel striking the hours on a single bell. Finely fretted blued steel hands. The original shaped lead weights and brass bob pendulum. John and Daniel Seddon were makers of very fine clocks. The best of which were the high quality longcase clocks with globe moons to the arch. Their clocks were particularly noted for the exceptionally fine engraving. John and Daniel Seddon were Quakers, John working from the early 18th century and Daniel from around 1740. Overall a very fine and original clock with the movement fully restored.
