Rare British Rail East Waterways Wall Clock

One for the railway and waterway enthusiasts, Clockwise is delighted to welcome into its collection a lovely restored British Railways East going train London wall clock dating from circa 1947. The eight day quality Smiths Empire platform escapement movement has just benefitted from a full overhaul so the clock enjoys a three year guarantee. The stamping on the movement rear shows this clock as dating from Smith's golden period of quality clock production between 1931 and 1955. Video below of the restored movement showing the dynamic escapement action. The six inch dial is in very good condition and bears the legend B.R (E) 13317. Records show this clock to be one of many located at 22 Dorset Square N.W 1 which housed the Docks and Inland Waterways Executive, which coordinated Britain's canal and dock systems following the Transport Act of 1947 when the railways and inland navigational routes were nationalised. This was all managed and overseen by British Rail prior to the formal creation of the separate British Waterways Board in 1962. The clock was later located at 163 Euston Road in Central London which served as the national headquarters of British Waterways. Original record entry below. This clock case is a delight of golden oak and of circular design in excellent condition. The British Rail reference number is stamped into the rear of the case.The clock retains its original cast bezel with bevel-edged domed glass which locks securely into an original brass tab. This smaller size railway clock is an intriguing find being allocated to England's waterways so appeals to both railway and waterway enthusiasts.
