Description
A very rare Worcester porcelain butter boat painted in polychrome enamels with flowers in yellow, green and light blue with red edging. Geranium moulded leaves for the outside with a shaped rim and short stalk forming the top of the handle. Unmarked, c.1755-1756. Butter boats and pickle dishes are very rarely decorated in enamels because the acids in the food that would be placed inside would react with the enamel colours. They are usually decorated in underglaze blue. All enamelled examples are very rare and all those we have seen are decorated in a bolder red, puce, green and yellow palette. We haven't come across any other examples in this combination of colours but one does appear to be illustrated in Coloured Worcester Porcelain Of The First Period, by Marshall, Plate 50, item 1033 which describes the enamel colours as red, green, blue and yellow (the red is minimal but present).
