Description
Very rare Georgian 18ct gold and Malacca walking sticks that date to between 1750 and 1780. The extended length is demonstrated in the first picture with it next to a normal cane. We know of one pair, they are detailed in the book Fascinating Walking Sticks by Ae Boothroyd page 84 for the text and 85 for the pictures. Those are silver plated mounts. We sold a solid silver pair a few years ago and have now found this on that is 18ct gold. Extremely rare to find and in this condition it's exceptional. Please see the picture of the cane being metal gun tested in the Birmingham Jewellery quarter. The top number shows the gold content at 17.35. In the 1700's they didn't have the technology we have now and so gold refinement wasn't as accurate. The top is engraved with the crest of the Clan Grant. It depicts the burning rock of Craigellachie (The rock of Alabm) and the motto Stand Fast. It also has treble ring decoration around the shoulders. These would have originally been a pair, one used as an everyday cane and one for Sunday best. This is in remarkable condition for it's age and so I suspect this was the Sunday cane. It has a few dinks as shown in the pictures but no holes or splits to the gold. The shaft is Malacca is excellent with no damage or repairs. The original long brass and steel ferrule shows little wear. Stunning condition for a cane that is 250 years old. Happy to answer any questions.
