Description
An attractive George III sterling silver sugar or pepper caster, dated 1784 and struck with the rare Incuse Duty Mark (George III facing left). Elegantly shaped in baluster form, with a plain and unembellished surface free from engraving, monograms, or erasure. The interior remains clean, and the pull-off lid fits neatly and closes securely. In 1784, a tax was introduced on silver and gold items, marked by an additional duty stamp featuring the head of George III. This punch, applied in incuse form - impressed into the silver rather than raised - was only used between December 1784 and May 1786, making it a rare and precise indicator of date, and of particular historical interest to collectors. Hallmarks: London, Silver fineness 925. Maker Thomas Shepherd Dimension: Diameter: 5.2cm (2"). Height: 15.1cm (6") approx.
