Rare Masons Ironstone Patent 652974 Yellow Ground Oriental Bird Charge Plate

Extremely rare English decorative charger plate by Mason’s, Patent Ironstone China, early 20th century. Decorated with a vibrant yellow ground, an exotic blue-and-gold bird motif and stylised floral ornament, combining transfer printing with hand enamelling and gilding. The scalloped, moulded rim with gilt edging reflects a formally registered design and is characteristic of Mason’s high-quality display wares of the Edwardian period, circa 1915. Pattern derived from late 19th-century Mason’s designs. The Orientalist decorative scheme reflects the strong influence of Japanese imports on European taste in the late Victorian period. Such richly decorated charger plates were costly to produce and intended primarily for display. The base bears the Mason’s Patent Ironstone mark, the registered design number Rd No 652974 (British Registered Design system, Board of Trade), impressed factory codes “W5H”, and a small handwritten factory reference “C1760”, all consistent with Mason’s internal production and control markings of the period. From a collecting perspective, this is a strong and well-preserved example of early 20th-century Mason’s production, bridging late Victorian Japonisme and Edwardian design, with a documented registered form and bold visual presence.
