Description
Rare Matching Pair Japanese Bronze Incense Burner Statues Figurines Meiji Period
This is a magnificent pair of original Japanese Meiji period bronze incense burners, beautifully modelled as mythical guardian Kirin (Qilin), among the most revered creatures in Japanese and East Asian mythology.
Expertly cast during the Meiji period (1868–1912), each magnificent beast stands proudly upon a naturalistically formed rocky base, displaying an extraordinary level of craftsmanship. Every detail has been finely executed, from the individually defined scales and flowing mane to the expressive open jaws and elegantly curled flame-like tail, demonstrating the exceptional quality associated with Japan's finest bronze foundries of the era.
Designed as functional incense burners, fragrant smoke gently rises from the open mouths of the Kirin, creating a wonderfully atmospheric effect while enhancing their dramatic sculptural presence.
The bronzes have acquired a superb, untouched rich chocolate-brown patina over the past century, beautifully accentuating the intricate surface detail and confirming their considerable age and authenticity.
In Japanese culture, the Kirin is an auspicious mythical creature symbolising prosperity, wisdom, serenity and divine protection. Traditionally regarded as a harbinger of peace and good fortune, Kirin sculptures were prized by collectors and displayed in distinguished homes as symbols of status and refinement.
Both highly decorative and historically significant, this impressive matching pair embodies the remarkable artistry that flourished during Japan's Meiji period, when master craftsmen combined centuries-old traditions with exceptional technical skill. Whether displayed on a mantelpiece, sideboard or library table, they make an outstanding statement and are certain to become a focal point of any fine collection.
An exceptionally handsome and increasingly sought-after pair of Meiji bronzes, combining superb craftsmanship, rich original patination and timeless decorative appeal.
