Description
Rare pair of Ligne Roset vintage American armchairs (circa 1970) and possibly designed by Michel Ducaroy. Super comfy and uber chic these armchairs are fully upholstered in the original fabric and of wraparound-type design with deep buttoning with rare smoked acrylic frames. They are part of a suite including a matching sofa which is available for sale separately on our website. The pieces are labelled with the maker's name Ligne Roset. The pattern of these chairs are clearly related to Roset's most famous design-the Togo pattern introduced in c.1973 having been designed by Michel Ducaroy. The Togo pattern was inspired by 1960s Pop Art and its visual similarities with the Bocca lips sofa will not go unnoticed by any informed viewer. The Togo pattern softening the design a little for a wider appeal whilst retaining its statement piece aesthetics. Although closely allied to the Togo pattern, the present pieces are believed to be an early design having the shaped smoked acrylic frames, which is correspondingly rare and sought-after by collectors of modern design and Roset in particular. The fabric is in good vintage condition, acrylic frames have scuffs and scratches as to be expected for its age. Ligne Roset: Founded in France in 1860, the firm has grown to be one of the most successful of international furniture distributors though still family owned and run. The firm's early pieces are particularly sought-after, especially those designed by the important designers who collaborated with the firm like Ducaroy and there is a keen collectors' market for good examples of unusual or iconic patterns in fine condition. Michel Ducaroy (1925-2009): Ducaroy was a member of a family of fine designers specialising in furniture. Michel studied at the École des beaux-arts in Lyon before joining his family firm. He began designing independently in 1952, beginning his association with Roset in 1954. Ducaroy championed the use of new materials and furniture-making techniques such as the emerging developments in foam padding. His genius was at its peak in the 1960s-early 70s and the present furniture is typical of his skill and perfect eye.
