Description
This is a rare 19th-century hand-coloured engraving of “The North Star” and “The Jupiter,” two of the first steam locomotives manufactured by R. Stephenson and Co in 1830 and 1831. The engraving was printed and published by Raphael Tuck & Sons in 1894 and depicts the Jupiter with a train of first-class carriages and the Royal Mail guarded carriage at the rear. Beneath is the North Star for second and third-class passengers traveling in uncovered carriages. The engraving is still in its original frame, which measures 85 cm by 45 cm.
