Rare Victorian snakewood and hallmarked silver walking stick or cane.
The pommel to the top is silver, stamped with the London assay office mark and the date letter for 1887 and the makers mark for George Watts & Co, London. A long and heavy cane for its age so possibly a commission piece.
Floral repousse decorated silver pommel, engraved on top TMR above the shaft which is snakewood. The patination in the wood is fabulous, the pictures don't do it justice. Not only do you have the "scale" pattern but also swirls where the wood has been trimmed. This is a rare to find wood and is strong enough to support a good weight. If you can find new snakewood cane today they are retailed for as much as £1000. Quite dark in colour the markings in the wood show better in natural light. Really heavy cane at 485 grams.
The period ferrule is original and made of steel and brass.
It's in excellent condition for its age with only some very minor signs of age and use as you can see in the pictures.
The shaft has no damage or repairs just marks commensurate with age.
Perfect for an every day cane.
Please contact us with any questions you may have.
measurements
It measures 94 cm 37 inches in length, the pommel is 2.9 cm 1 5/32 inches wide and 3.2 cm 1 1/4 inches long.
