Rare and unusual coconut palm wood and hallmarked silver walking stick or cane with an amethyst ball pommel. The silver was assayed in London as shown in the pictures, date letter for 1891 and has the makers mark for William Bert & Co of Vigo Street. The silver collar is plain with the ball set into it. Well figured piece of amethyst for the pommel top, the colour and geometric design within the cystals work well with the unusual grain in the coconut palm wood. The palm wood is exceptional, a fibrous wood with a dark background with light flecks of grain pattern. More pronounced in some sections than others. Native to Africa it's similar to partridge wood but not nearly as easy to find. We've never had a cane with the shaft in this rare to find wood. Very strong and a good thick shaft that will support a good weight. The ferrule is original is made of polished black buffalo horn which goes well with the colouing in the wood. Please contact us with any questions you may have.
It measures 91.5 cm 36 inches in length, the pommel is 5 cm 1 15/16 inches wide.
