Description
A scale half hull model of the Twin Screw Steamer Cambridge by Earles Shipbuilding Company of Hull C.1886
This half hull is laid up on pine planks, painted black top sides with boxwood stringing, on a mahogany back board. The SS Cambridge was a twin screw steamship built of steel. She was the third of these vessels built by Earles for the same owner, her sister vessels are Norwich and Ipswich. The vessel itself was, according to a newspaper report in the Sheffield Daily Telegraph, 30th of November 1887, ‘built to the order of the Great Eastern Railway Company. Completed, and placed on her station in the early spring’. The Cambridge was officially launched by the Mayor of Cambridge on the 11th of October 1886, however she did not begin active service until the next year, as reflected on her plaque.
