I hope to show case a small selection of Celtic jewellery, silver and bijouterie.
Mainly Scottish , Irish, Welsh, Brittany, Scandinavia and the Celtic people worldwide, to include what is generally considered to be Celtic design from non Celtic countries.
Remarkable Scottish vintage Crowned Luckenbooth silver brooch with a claw set central oval smokey quartz gemstone of approximately 1.5 carat, hallmarked in Edinburgh in 1978 and almost certainly by James Coull Ltd of Mitchell Street, Glasgow. Stamped "made in Scotland", full Edinburgh hallmark and a very lightly struck makers mark in which can be seen the very faint outline of the intertwined "J" and "C" of James Coulls Ltd. The brooch appears to be heavily tarnished in the low points with the high points being bright silver, as this may be part of the original finish, as was done on some of these brooches I would not recommend cleaning, good pin and good safety "C" catch.
Luckenbooth brooches were given as a love token and a betrothal gift, believed to revert the "evil eye", protect children from a witches influence and to help mothers milk flow. The Crown is believed to refer to Mary Queen of Scots, in that some of them have a vague shape of an "M".
