This is a second set, this time of twenty matching Irish linen damask dinner napkins, belonging to Eliza Stewart Speirs who was also the owner of the two tablecloths and the 12 napkins in the listing below. Like the cloths, they have her initials, ESS embroidered in red and the number 48. Once again, I think this number refers to the date, since Eliza married Alexander Speirs in 1836 and these would have been her linens. They have a very pretty and intricate floral design but they have been well used - and repaired. See condition report. It is, however, rare to find twenty matching napkins. They are some 32 inches square, but some of them are a little smaller, and may have been cut down very slightly. So - not perfect, but old and beautiful all the same. They have been invisibly mended in places. These are historic pieces that may even have been woven in Scotland, which had a flourishing linen industry at that time - but I have no way of knowing.
The 200 Year Old House has clarified that the Set of 20 Matching Victorian Irish Linen Dinner Napkins - Eliza Stewart Speirs ,1848 (LA225215) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being 1848
These have been very well used. One of them in particular is in bad condition, with marks and a very rough edge, but many of them have thin places, and there is quite a bit of invisible mending, which is rather beautiful - but if you are after perfection these are not for you. They have clearly been treasured. They have been laundered and are quite clean and fresh, but will need professional pressing.
I will courier these via UPS. I can send to the UK, the US and parts of Europe. Please enquire with your address for a precise price. I can package items together as far as possible, although linens are heavy.
