Description
Clockwise is pleased to have for sale this lovely eight day ships clock from the respected maker of high quality bulkhead clocks and chronometers 'Mercer' of London. Thomas Mercer founded his company in 1858 as makers of chronometers, specializing in marine chronometers and becoming the undisputed leader, having attained particular renown for supplying the chronometer for Shackleton’s trans-Antarctic expedition of 1914. This model of wall marine clock was introduced in 1953. It has a beveled glass hinged lid and the dial and heavy brass case are in excellent original condition; there is the usual fine timing adjustment on the dial and the original hands and bevelled glass to the hinged front bezel finish off this lovely piece. The high quality movement is fitted with a fine lever escapement platform and the entire piece has just been fully dismantled, serviced and cleaned. The dial has been restored to a lovely condition and the clock is covered by my three year warranty. Delivery can be arranged, please contact me for further details. Thomas Mercer was born in 1822 in St. Helens. At a very young age, he started working in his grandfather's workshop, building his first mechanical watch. In 1854 he went to London and found his first job at John Fletcher, a well-known manufacturer of marine chronometers. Four years later, he split amicably from Fletcher to found his own company that became well-known under his name. He opened his first workshop in Clerkenwell at 161 Goswell Road. Clockwise specialises in longcase and bracket clocks and with clients from the world of business, film, sport, royalty and aristocracy - yet more than happy with traditional clients - Clockwise has an unrivalled reputation for excellence and superb service.
