Silver Singer Patent Compass No 19835 Retailed by Callaghan c.1873
A very good scarce Singer’s Patent compass no. 19835 in a silver hunter case by Benjamin Alfred Green and retailed by Callaghan c.1873.
1⅜” diameter Singer’s Patent compass having mother of pearl dry card on jewelled suspension, hand decorated with cardinal and intercardinal points, “Singer’s Patent,” “19835,” and Singer’s trademark star and lyre indicating north. Further carrying the retailer’s detail, “Callaghan, 23 New Bond St, London.”
Contained in a fully hallmarked solid silver hunter case by Benjamin Alfred Green, date letter “S” for 1873.
Condition: The mother of pearl card very crisp and clean, swinging freely and finding north easily, the transit lock working well. The sterling silver hunter case in very good condition, a few light marks.
Comments: This is one of the 26,000 or so compasses manufactured whilst Samuel Berry Singer still held the patent on his iconic design, and as such very collectable, particularly given the addition of the retailer, William Callaghan, who was known for retailing the finest quality instruments.
A truly wonderful gift for a special occasion.
