Description
Charming Slim Longcase Clock by John Peck II of Milton (For Milton Ernest, Bedfordshire).
30 Hour Post Constructed Movement with 10.25in or 26cm Dial.
Height 82in or 208cm
It is thought that John’s father (also John) was apprenticed to John Steger of London before moving to Bolnhurst (Beds) around 1726 when he got married. He was also a white smith and publican - ‘ingenious, honest and benevolent' - died in 1764.
John II was born circa 1736 and worked at Milton Ernest till his death in 1776. He married in 1759 and was also a farmer.
There are also three other John Pecks working in the area. One at Thrapston Northamptonshire (late 18th c) and the other 2 at Wellingborough, also Northamptonshire (1778-1834 and 1847-77). So, John may not have died in 1776, he just moved away and succeeded by his son(s) or nephews.
Also listed as working in the Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire area are George, William I and William II.
There are also several Pecks who emigrated to America.
The case is in good sound stable order with good patina.
The 30 hour movement has been checked, serviced and tested. Good Antique Working Order and Keeping Good Time.
