Description
A good example of a small english Oak Coffer dating from the mid 17th Century, believed to originate from North Devon. It has a traditional panelled construction standing on four block feet. The front is decorated with a simple frieze rail of arched carvings and small circular motifs in both front panels. The lid opens to reveal a boarded floor and its original candle box. The lid opens on small ring hinges and it comes with its original working lock and key. It is in good original condition and has developed a beautiful rich patina. It has avoided ever being overcarved and is a very pretty well balanced example on long legs. There are some signs of age and use, some old historic shrinkage splits and some slight wear to the finish on the sides but nothing detrimental. There are signs of old worm and rot in the back and the bottom of the legs which is all historic but has been treated as a precaution and it is strong and sturdy. It has had strap hinges removed at some point and the holes filled and the latch part of the lock has been repaired but overall it displays very well. The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.
