Description
A pleasing small George II / George III oak panelled coffer, dating to around c.1730–1770. Of good country proportions, the coffer has a three-panel front beneath a panelled lift-up lid, with plain fielded side panels and simple stile-and-rail construction. It is a nicely restrained example, with no unnecessary decoration, allowing the age, surface and natural character of the oak to speak for itself.
The coffer is a particularly usable small size, being more manageable than many early oak chests. It retains a lovely dry original surface, good colour and a quiet, unspoilt appearance. The interior is clean and practical, with its internal candle box / till still present, and the lid retains what appear to be its original iron strap hinges. A very usable piece, suitable as a blanket box, linen chest, hallway storage piece or general decorative storage coffer.

declaration
Leeds Antiques has clarified that the Small George II / George III Oak Panelled Coffer 1730-1770 (LA577114) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being Circa 1730 to 1770
condition
In very good, honest, original condition. The coffer is very sound, with no loose joints, and is ready for use. It appears largely original and unmolested, retaining a lovely dry old surface, colour and patina throughout. There is one old bracket addition/repair to a back corner, which is in keeping with the piece and forms part of its history rather than detracting from it. The hinges appear original and there are no obvious signs to suggest they have been replaced. There are the expected old marks, knocks, scratches, wear and minor surface blemishes consistent with age and use. Overall, a clean, original and very appealing small 18th-century oak coffer.
