Description
Size: 5 cm tall, 6 cm wide
Condition: Very good condition. Two small flat chips o the inside of the footrim.
This charming little vase is potted in a buff stoneware clay (the Chinese tradition would however recognise it as porcelain). It is turned at the foot, and glazed in a green celadon type glaze, thinly applied and stopping short of the foot.
Close inspection shows internal crazing and some impurities in the glaze, which are not apparent to the naked eye.
A label on the underside identifies the vase as Hanoi trade ware, 14th/16th centuries (Ming Dynasty period in China). We understand that this piece is from the collection of Roger Edmundson, and the label is probably his.
The attribution is consistent with our research, which shows similar wares made in Vietnam during the late Song to early Ming period.
