Description
We present for consideration, this well-appointed fusee wall clock with 12” dial, by clockmaking brothers James and Stephen Tree of 120-122 Great Dover Street, Lambeth, London. James (born c1839) and Stephen (born 1846) were listed as watch and clockmakers and jewellers, the pair (along with a third and younger brother, named John Tree, born c1851), eventually took over the family business from their father James Tree (Sr), under whom both Stephen and John also served their apprenticeships. However in c1888, John left the family business to set-up on his own as a goldsmith and jeweller, leaving brothers James (Jr) and Stephen to make clocks and watches under the “Tree” family Name. Nb: James Tree (Sr), born 1811 in Newington, Lambeth, started the family business in the 1840’s, living and working from 122 Great Dover Street. Like his sons to be, James (Sr) was a distinguished goldsmith, watch maker and jeweller. He passed away in 1893. The clocks solid Walnut turned roundhead face has wonderful graining and sits over its veneered boxed cabinet. The box has a hinged inspection door located on the side and an operable lockable regulator door located at the bottom of the box. The clock retains its original metal dial, with painted black Roman numerals and the Tree family details, finished with its original pair of blued Spade hands, secured with a pinned collet. The clocks dial is then protected by a thick glaze mounted in a solid brass bezel. The clock benefits from a quality 8-day single fusee driven movement set between rectangular plates and turned pillars and comes with its original 75mm diameter brass pendulum bob and a brass/steel winding key. A splendid English wall clock, from one of London’s fine clockmaking families of the late 1800’s.
