Description
A sweet early 19th century Staffordshire porcelain figure of a fawn coloured seated pug set upon a scrolled shaped base decorated in green enamel and gilding, c.1830. Very similar in style for the most part of the Derby and Rockingham pugs, and clearly they were an inspiration for the modelling of the body and base although this one then has an usually poised head, angled fully to the right. Black enamelled detail to the face and black collar, with gilded balls and tag and also a red and white daisy flower at the back (similar to those seen on some Rockingham models). It has an indented base with no opening.
Reference: Staffordshire porcelain pugs similar to this one are described in "Dogs In English Porcelain", by Rice, pages 37-38, and it is noted that they often follow similar lines to the Derby versions, with similar sounding bases to this figure, but no mention of any particularly with this unusual right facing head.
