Dating from the 5th to 12th century, this early Medieval or Byzantine gold ring once rested on the hand of someone who lived more than a thousand years before us. Its handmade gold form survives in remarkably preserved condition.
Made in high-carat gold, the ring is shaped with a wide hoop that rises to a striking square bezel. This solid-sided folded collet holds a square piece of flat glass, now a deep, very dark red that complements the bold geometry of the bezel.
Each shoulder is adorned with trefoil granulation, a delicate decorative technique that adds texture and visual interest to the otherwise geometric design. A subtle central ridge runs the length of the shank, echoing the strong lines of the bezel. The band has shifted slightly from its original shape over time, with soft signs of wear consistent with great age, yet the ring remains intact.
Rings from this period rarely survive in such complete condition, and the combination of a square bezel, early granulation, and deep red glass gives this piece a distinctive character. It stands as a quiet but powerful reminder of the artistry of early medieval goldworkers.
