The Ancient Roman 2nd Century Cupid And Phallus Intaglio Ring

This incredible ring holds an ancient Roman intaglio dating back to the 2nd Century. Inset carved into the stone is a winged putto, likely Cupid, sat atop a phallus with fawn legs and hooved feet. In ancient Rome, phallic symbols were seen to bring protection against harm, worn as a sign of fertility, vitality and prosperity, whilst Cupid was, as he is now, seen as a symbol of love and desire. The fawn often symbolised desire, virility and fertility, much of whose Roman-era symbolism was taken from ancient Greek lore about the Satyr. The intaglio stone is set in yellow gold, framed by lined detailing. It is thought that the ring was set much later than when this stone was artfully crafted, likely in the 19th century. The shoulders of this ring slim into a plain yellow gold band. Provenance: Acquired at public auction from a reputable fine-art and antiques auction house (London, UK).
