The Ancient Roman Carnelian Stag & Scorpion Intaglio Ring

This stunningly detailed ring holds a bright orange carnelian gemstone at it's head with intricate engraving. Fashioned as an intaglio, the stone depicts a figure holding a stag's head in one hand and a scorpion in the other. In ancient Rome, stags symbolised the sacred wilderness and divine association with Diana, goddess of the hunt, while scorpions represented danger, protection, and were strongly linked to the zodiac sign Scorpio and military power. The back of the rings head features lined detailing and foliate, floral engraving, making this ring a fascinating one from every angle. The shoulders feature scrolled detailing, leading to a plain yellow gold band. Though the intaglio is Roman, the setting is likely from the 17th century.
