Description
Size: Carving without stand 16 cm tall, with stand and dome 22 cm tall (the dome is 8 inches width) Condition: Good overall condition but the carving has had a life. It has suffered from woodworm in the past - this is no longer active and some of the holes have been filled. There is a very small chip to the end of one ivy leaf and slight loss to one ivy stalk. The base has been re-gilded. Thomas Wilkinson Wallis was a remarkable wood carver from Louth in Lincolnshire, whose work is hard to find. His trademark was the snail and this carving is a simple snail crawling up a gnarled branch entwined with ivy. The carving is in limewood which is lightly stained. It is on its original turned wooden mahogany base - the dome is a replacement. The carving is signed by the artist T W Wallis Louth, and dated 1867. A rare survivor and a truly wonderful piece of carving.
