Sadly, the prettier of these two Victorian Kashmir shawls, is the most damaged. Please read the full description for more information. The first, and largest, measures some 158cm square, and is somewhat darker than in the pictures - i.e. a definite shade of mid brown. It has a few thin places, but I can't see any actual holes. I think it is wool, but it isn't very soft, and there could be some silk in there. I think the fringe is silk. It is hand hemmed. I've included some picture of the reverse. The boteh around the border are quite elongated, which also gives it a certain amount of age. I suspect this is possibly a Kani shawl, using a kind of tapestry technique, although I can't be sure. The second shawl is in a similar style, smaller at 143 cm square, possibly older than the first, and a paler shade - a kind of dark cream. (See last three pictures.) The flowers are very beautiful, and very detailed which makes it a real pity that there is a nasty patch of damage - which you should be able to see in one of the pictures. It has been carefully darned, but then the moths have had their way again, and there is another patch of holes alongside the first - little rips and tears covering an area some 18 by 15 cm. All the same, the red, blue and green embroidery is very lovely - sprays of gorgeous florals. You could consider backing the damaged area in some way to preserve it. It is much too pretty to cut up. These shawls both have that slightly musty scent of very old textiles, but are otherwise clean. I think they come from Kashmir itself, rather than Paisley, and they are smaller than crinoline shawls, so were probably brought to Scotland in the 19th century. These were a favourite gift for ladies from their sons and husbands in the Anglo Indian army. Certainly not top quality, but lovely survivals all the same.
The 200 Year Old House has clarified that the Two Square Victorian Kashmir Shawls (LA321739) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being Early to mid 19th century
Please read full description for details of large patch of damage on the lighter of the two shawls. These smell a little musty, as befits their age, but not unpleasantly so.
