Description
An unusually small and very attractive pocket compass by Francis Barker in original leather travel case c.1885. Antique pocket compass having 1⅛” frosted yellow compass dial with silvered reflector ring, the centre hand-decorated with cardinals and intercardinals. Bar needle suspended on jewelled suspension under bevelled low dome crystal held brass bezel, oxidised brass case with suspension ring. All within its original leather over wood blue velvet lined travel case, swinging catch. Comments: A very unusual and attractive pocket compass, the compass unsigned but bearing all the hallmarks of Francis Barker, the preeminent maker of compasses of the day, who produced white label instruments for the trade, rarely self-signing.
