Description
Elegant United States Navy officer’s sword corresponding to the regulation Model 1852, made in Spain by the well known Bermejo Factory of Toledo during the 1960s or 1970s. This is a ceremonial piece based on the official design adopted by the US Navy in the 19th century, with a refined aesthetic and an execution typical of the Toledo tradition aimed at military export. The inscription “USN” on the guard confirms its direct connection with United States naval officers.
The hilt has a ribbed core covered with a synthetic material resembling shagreen, secured with spirally wrapped metal wire. The mount is made of gilt brass and displays the characteristic ornamentation of this regulation model, with vegetal reliefs and symbolic elements inspired by naval imagery. The pommel is decorated with the American eagle in relief within a geometric border, while the knuckle guard and shell guard maintain a balanced and representative decorative composition.
The straight stainless steel blade is in excellent condition, with full acid etched decoration on both sides. Among the motifs are eagles, shields, stars, anchors, military trophies and classical ornaments associated with naval iconography. The etching is crisp and even, with no visible losses. At the base of the blade, the inscription “Fábrica Bermejo Toledo Spain Stainless” can be clearly seen, identifying its industrial origin and its production for the international military market.
The original scabbard is covered in black leather with gilt metal mounts and suspension rings. The fittings retain a restrained decoration in keeping with the official character of the sword. The ensemble shows good structural integrity and light signs of use consistent with its age, without affecting its overall presence or ceremonial function.
This is a sword intended for dress occasions, ceremonies or parades. As it corresponds to the historic regulation Model 1852 and was made in Toledo, it represents an interesting piece within 20th century militaria collecting. It is especially suitable for a specialized collection of ceremonial naval weapons.
A regulation example based on the historic Model 1852 adopted by the US Navy. It stands out for the quality of its Toledo manufacture and for its excellent state of preservation. A complete set with its original scabbard, ideal for a specialized collection or as a representative piece of naval militaria.
Measurements: Total length: 90 cm (35.43 in). Blade length: 75 cm (29.72 in).
History of the Model 1852 naval sword
The regulation Model 1852 sword was officially adopted by the United States Navy in the mid 19th century as the distinctive weapon of naval officers. Its design was inspired by European naval models, especially British ones, and answered both practical and symbolic needs. Although it was initially conceived as a functional weapon, over time its use became restricted to ceremonial and formal contexts.
During the 20th century, especially after the Second World War, the Model 1852 sword continued to form part of the full dress uniform of US Navy officers. The production of these swords was partially outsourced to specialized manufacturers, among which the Toledo firms stood out because of their international prestige in the manufacture of edged weapons. Companies such as Fábrica Bermejo produced examples intended for naval academies, official ceremonies and institutional events.
