Description
Height : 45 cm (18 inches), 38 cm across rim. Condition: A part of the base has been broken off in the past, and this has been re-glued with old professional restoration. We have cleaned off much of this restoration, to reduce the inappropriate overpainting, so that the repair is now visible but not obtrusive. The crack can be seen on the underside but not inside as we have left the well-matched restoration. One of the feet also has a small area of refilling and re-touching. We feel that the jardiniere displays very well, but professional restoration could easily be applied to make the damage invisible. Please see photos. Apart from this repair, there are a couple of small glaze grazes in places, none significant. This splendid item is a superb example of Minton majolica from the period when they were pre-eminent in Europe for the quality of that kind of ware. The rich blue exterior, striking pink interior and the green and ochres of the decoration are of the highest quality, and the design is bold without being fussy. Objects of this kind were destined for the best homes in England and elsewhere. Today they can form the centrepiece of a conservatory or hallway. Minton made this model for quite some time in at least two different sizes, this being the larger and considerably rarer one, and in several colourways. This particular one has the stamped date code for 1881 on the base, as well as the stamped Mintons mark. There is also the stamped pattern mark, not quite legible. There is a drainage hole in the bottom (not drilled). A rare and lovely item, unfortunately with some repair, but these items are very hard to find in undamaged and our price reflects the condition. The jardiniere is very heavy and will be sent in a wooden crate for protection.
