Description
Fine and scarce mid 19th Century English Victorian antique blue & white transfer plate ,"Death of the Bear", from the "Oriental Sport" Series, produced by Edward Challinor of Pinnocks Works and Unicorn Pottery, Tunstall, Staffordshire {1842-1867}. This series of designs is copied directly from Spode's earlier "Indian Sporting" series, itself extremely popular and commercially successful, and may thus be regarded as a blatant example of "piggy-backing" upon the larger company's success, a practice common at this time. The reverse with underglaze blue printed mark with the series title Oriental Sport within a ribbon cartouche surmounted by a crown above the initials Gr within laurel fronds.
