Description
This is a lovely example of classic blue and white Victorian pottery. It was made by the firm of John Meir and Son, of Greengates pottery in Tunstall (Stoke on Trent), in about 1860. It is earthenware with a transfer printed pattern in cobalt blue. The pattern is usually known as Willow pattern. It is derived from Chinese porcelain and was one of the most popular patterns for blue and white pottery of the 19th century, in Britain and elsewhere in Europe. The underside of the plate has a printed mark for John Meir & Son and the title Staffordshire. There are three stilt marks on both the top and bottom, showing that the dish was fired in a stack each with a three-pronged support (stilt) separating it form those above and below.

Very good condition, glaze and colours bright. There is a small area of glaze crazing on the underside which looks like it could have been caused by a minute fault in the glaze, but this does not go through and it appears to be a surface issue only.
