A very nice example of a Victorian tile with a depiction of a stream among woodland. The technique of casting a picture in low relief and then using a coloured glaze to highlight the areas of light and shade is known as Emaux Ombrants. It was used by Wedgwood, Minton and others on plates particularly. On tiles it was famously used by Burmantofts Art Pottery, and this may be Burmantofts, although it is not marked.
