Description

Lovely large majolica strawberry serving basket by George Jones with large double compartment for holding the berries and 2 smaller bowls on either side for cream and sugar. The edges are formed as tree branches and it has a large "branch" carry handle with moulded leaves and raised up on 4 feet also moulded as twisted branches. The inside of tray has a textured finish with the classic George Jones turquoise ground with moulded strawberry flowers and leaves spreading over the surface. Impressed diamond registration mark for 1873 and painted model number 3300. Design referenced figure 70, page 51, George Jones Ceramics 1861-1951, Robert Cluett.

Condition is very good; The handle has been broken, and professionally restored and redecorated very well. There is a small glaze flake to the edge of a leaf on the edge and a little wear to the high points of the glaze to some of the raised decoration mainly along the central ridge in the basket. Perfect for display and can still be used as a server but I would just exercise a little caution given the repair-work and weight of the piece and carry it as you would a large bowl.
