Description
Fine Victorian (circa 1870) Roman Micromosaic Brooch Depicting the Colosseum in the Manner of Cesare Roccheggiani.
A superb antique Roman micromosaic brooch dating to the Grand Tour period of the nineteenth century, depicting the iconic Colosseum in Rome with exceptional detail and craftsmanship. Circa 1870, the brooch is finely executed in minute hand-cut coloured glass tesserae and mounted in unmarked high-carat yellow gold, likely 15ct, with an elegant black surround. Presented in a fitted case.
This highly decorative example captures one of Rome’s most celebrated ancient monuments and represents the refined artistry associated with the finest Roman micromosaic workshops of the Victorian era. The composition demonstrates remarkable technical skill, with thousands of tiny individually placed tesserae forming the architectural detail of the Colosseum, delicate tonal shading, and atmospheric sky. The black border enhances the brilliance of the mosaic and provides strong contrast against the warm gold mount.
Roman micromosaics became highly desirable during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries among affluent travellers undertaking the Grand Tour of Italy. Such pieces were purchased as luxurious souvenirs and symbols of classical education and taste. Larger architectural subjects of this quality were considerably more expensive than ordinary tourist examples and intended for wealthy collectors and aristocratic visitors.
Attributed in the manner of Cesare Roccheggiani, one of the leading Roman micromosaic artists active during the second half of the nineteenth century. Although unsigned, the workmanship strongly reflects the refined style and exceptional quality associated with the Roccheggiani workshop tradition.
The brooch combines fine antique jewellery with important Grand Tour decorative arts appeal and would make an excellent addition to any collection of antique micromosaics, Victorian jewellery, or Italian works of art.
