Description
A rare and highly interesting late 19th century Kentometer, housed in its original glazed mahogany case and dating to circa 1880. Manufactured by Brady & Martin Ltd of Newcastle-on-Tyne, as indicated by the maker’s plaque, this scientific instrument is an excellent example of Victorian engineering and craftsmanship.
The mahogany case, of rich colour and fine grain, is fitted with a glazed front door enclosing a beautifully arranged interior of brass-mounted components and glass tubes. The instrument features a calibrated mercury scale, alongside a series of cylindrical chambers and fittings, all meticulously mounted against the polished mahogany backboard. The combination of brass, glass and timber creates a striking visual contrast, typical of high-quality scientific apparatus of the period.
Retaining its original fittings, including side-mounted mechanisms and internal elements, the piece remains a compelling display of both form and function. The case itself shows a warm, aged patina, with minor wear consistent with age, adding to its authenticity and character.
Both decorative and historically significant, this Kentometer would make a fascinating addition to a collection of scientific instruments or a distinctive interior feature. A fine example of Victorian ingenuity, presented in remarkably original condition.
