Standing on a cast iron base with foliate cast stem, and foliate cast animal foot. The label of ‘John Carter’s Patent Literary Machine – Trade Mark Registered – 6A New Cavendish St., Portland Place, London, W’ is to the back of the reading support. John Carter was a Victorian inventor and cabinet maker and produced several designs of patented ‘Literary Machines’, operating out of his London premises.
