Victorian Mahogany Revolving Office Desk Chair by CV Smith
A handsome antique late Victorian mahogany swivel desk chair dating from circa 1880, by the London maker Cornelius Vincent Smith. In dark solid mahogany with ball end arms and sunburst carved frieze, the design taking influence from the concurrent aesthetic movement and burgeoning Arts and Crafts period. The seat is upholstered in a faux suede fabric and is raised on four steeply swept legs which locate into a cast swivel mechanism, the legs terminating in brass and ceramic casters. Stamped with makers initials “CVS” to the underside of one leg.
Cornelius Vincent Smith was first listed in The Furniture Gazette in 1891 as, “the well-known upholstering manufacturer and art furniture maker.” He was especially well known for his chairs. He had workshops in North West London at Osnaburgh Street and later at Hampstead Road.
