Victorian Pocket Compass by Barker c.1870

This is a very good antique pocket compass in original case by Francis Barker, London c1870. Pocket compass having 1⅜" quadrant paper dial, divided to 2°, the inner showing the cardinals, intercardinals and false points, fleur de lys to indicate north, decorated centre. Blued steel flat needle, marked "N" and "S" in gilt, suspended on a brass pivot. Bevelled low dome glass contained within a brass bezel, silvered reflector ring, within a lacquered brass watch form case. All contained within its correct leather over wood case, lined in dark green velvet with swinging hook closure. Condition: The paper dial very crisp. The bright blued needle swinging freely, and finding north easily. The glass damage-free. The lacquered brass case retaining virtually all its original finish, losses to suspension post and ring. The leather case in good sound condition, small loss to verso, the velvet lining crisp and bright. Comments: Although unsigned, the dial pattern is identical to that of compasses made by Francis Barker, the leading compass manufacturer of the time, who supplied instruments to the trade. A lovely antique compass in good working order and above average condition. A perfect gift.
