Description
This 19th Century (c.1870) Victorian antique shaped walnut loo table that was made in the Smith Brothers of Bristol workshops, who were serving the well heeled and professional classes in this affluent city and surrounding areas.
Loo was a popular parlour game in the Victorian period, the upper and middle classes would invite families and friends to join them to play the game. The hosts would like to show their success and would compete to have the best table was on the market to impress any visitor, this example would have been at the upper echelon of cost, very few people would have been able to afford such a table, nowadays people can show their success having a Bentley or Rolls Royce at this time where cars were not around fine furnishings could give the same effect.
Their goods are always of the highest quality (sometimes you will find an item by this company stamped just Bros)
The wonderful, shaped top with the Irish carving running around the lower moulding and a thumb moulding above, the burr walnut book matched highlighting the heartwood at the centre that is slightly darker in tone.
The magnificent base with the shaped cluster supports with the fine turned finial in the centre and then the quadruple finely carved cabriole legs below.
Imagine being the proud owner of this fine table and the pleasure it will give you either using it as a centre table or a dining table for 6.
On occasions customers have been disappointed to miss an item as they e-mailed their enquiry instead of phoning, I would recommend that if you wish to get the piece, please call rather than e-mail. We are very friendly and easy to deal with.
