Description
A most attractive and well coloured mid 19th Century antique English Victorian Staffordshire Pottery spill vase figure group, "Band of Hope" ~ H 1790. Comprising a woman standing upon an oval base, holding a shield emblazoned with a Cross in her left hand, the hand of a small boy in her right, with the title in raised gilt capitals. The boy stands by her right side, holding a flag above his head, the spill vase forming a tree trunk to her left, the snake entwined around it, a metaphor for Temptation, alluding to the serpent encountered by Eve in the Garden of Eden. The Band of Hope was founded in Leeds in 1847, it's title being suggested by the Reverend Jabez Tunnicliffe, a prominent Leeds temperance worker, as a temperance organisation for working-class children who had taken the pledge. From this original foundation, a national organisation was formed in 1855 which, as Hope UK, continues to offer education, training and support to those involved in the field of alcohol and drug abuse and related issues.
