Vintage Arts & Crafts Style American Sterling Silver Two Light Candelabra c.1940
An exceptional, fine and impressive pair of vintage American sterling silver two light candelabra; an addition to our ornamental American silverware collection.
These exceptional, fine and impressive vintage American sterling silver candelabra have a circular shaped form, from the Spring Glory suite design.
Each impressive two light candelabrum retains the original scrolling arms, supporting two rounded organic-shaped swept capitals.
The lower portion of each capital bears four ball motifs, all in the classic Arts and Crafts style.
The conjoining portion of the bifurcating labra incorporates a stylised tulip bud (known as the fleur danoise/Danish flower) with a spiralling stem design; bearing the influence of the craftsman's time studying silversmithing in Denmark with Georg Jensen*.
The vintage silver floriated columns surmount an unweighted plain silver circular swept foot, with a plain collet rim.
This pair of American sterling silver candelabra offers refined elegance and presence, making a distinguished centrepiece for formal interiors and an exceptional gift for weddings, anniversaries or milestone celebrations.
NOTE: * This pair of Georg Jensen-inspired sterling silver candelabra was designed by Alphonse La Paglia for the International Silver Company, New York. Alphonse La Paglia (1907-1953) was a Sicilian-born silversmith, trained in Denmark under Georg Jensen before relocating to New York in the early 1940s, creating jewellery and silverware for Frederick Lunning. During WWII, he produced Jensen-inspired designs for Georg Jensen USA from his New Jersey studio. After departing Jensen USA in 1948/49, La Paglia partnered with International Silver Company from 1952 and relocated his workshop to Meriden, Connecticut. Alongside Eric Kurt Christofferson they co-founded the International Sterling Crafts Associates, who created design input for International Silver. Following his death, International Silver Company acquired and continued producing his designs until 1957. This is an authentic example of mid-century American modernism shaped by Scandinavian design lineage.
