Description
A rare Scottish silver demi-parure of a sea serpent necklace dating from the 1960s/1970s and a matching pair of silver sea serpent ear clips, hallmarked 1970 at Edinburgh. The maker, for both, is Hamish Dawson-Bowman of C.A.I. of Iona fame. The necklace has 10 sea serpents 5 with a right inclination and 5 with a left inclination and 3 are marked "D" over "B" for Hamish Dawson-Bowman and 5 are marked "C.A.I." for Celtic Art Industries, 1 is marked "sterling" and 1 is marked "Scotland" and the necklace is 16 inches in length. The later ear clips, have been made as ear clips and have not been removed from the necklace, they are fully hallmarked in Edinburgh and were made by Hamish Dawson-Bowman and carry his mark of "D" over "B" and also "Scotland". Cased in a partially fitted later case. All is good, cleaned but not polished and ready to wear as is, though would benefit from further cleaning but that is the decision of the new custodian. C.A.I. : Founded in 1945 by Hamish Dawson-Bowman to continue the tradition of Celtic and Iona silver craft, which was revived so elegantly by Alexander and Euphemia Ritchie, he employed local craftsmen some of whom went on to be master silversmiths in their own right, John Hart, Iain MacCormick Malachy Gormley, spring to mind. Even though based in Glasgow C.A.I. had close connections with the Isle of Iona and was able to use some of Alexander Ritchie’s designs.
