Description
Gentleman's highly impressive original Antique American Waltham high grade 'Royal' 17 jewel pocket watch with beautiful ivory porcelain dial in a chunky 16 size, 14ct gold filled (stamped) Dennison case. Looks to have been much loved and very well taken care of - her condition certainly reflects this. Full working order and is an excellent timekeeper (within +2/-2 minutes per 24 hours). Fully checked, serviced by my highly experienced watchmaker and is guaranteed to be 100% authentic - a timepiece to grace any collection! Dial;- Impressive and distinctive, high gloss ivory coloured porcelain dial in mint condition - absolutely hairlines, marks or nibbles. Clearly stamped in black fancy script; Waltham. Bold black Roman numerals with black minute markers, bolder black 5 minute markers and triangular shaped 15 minute markers to chapter ring. Recessed sub dial with black Arabic numbers and black seconds chapters. Finely cut, original bright blued steel spade and whip hands and blued steel arrow tip seconds hand all in lovely straight order. Original thick bevel edge glass (not acrylic) in clear and bright condition with few very light and fine little surface scratches commensurate with age. Case;- The highly polished chunky 14ct gold filled case (5cm diameter / 6.9cm from top of bow to base is heavy (has a pleasing solid feel in the hand and total watch weight is 105.1 grams), robust and in wonderful condition (please excuse the reflections/dark shadows in the pictures, was extremely difficult to photograph) - absolutely no indentations or wear and just a few extremely light and fine little (micro) overall surface scratches again commensurate with age and use in her 117 years service (looks to have had very little if any use, perhaps only high days and holidays). All covers (both inside and out) still retain their original, high gloss, mirror finish. The front bezel is hinged at the 6 position, opens correctly to exactly 90 degrees closing tightly with a very reassuring click. The back cover and dust cover are again hinged at the 6 position, both open to an absolute fraction over 90 degrees, closing tightly and positively. The inside of the back cover is clearly stamped; SUN TRADE MARK A.L.D. DENNSION WATCH CASE Co and has their Trade symbols of a star, crescent moon and sun to centre. (Aaron Lufkin Dennison - one of the founding Fathers of the American Waltham Watch Co., who moved to Birmingham, England to establish the Dennison Case Company). Numbered; 348028 - this is correctly, partially repeated to the inside of the bezel lip and back case curvette; 820. Also carries an old service mark which looks to be dated; 38 (1938). The inside of the dust cover (which has some little scratches - looks like someone once tested it to see if solid gold) is stamped in arched script; ENGLISH MAKE GUARANTEED TO BE MADE OF TWO PLATES OF 14ct GOLD WITH PLATE OF COMPOSITION BETWEEN AND TO WEAR 25 YEARS (the 'Sun' cases carried the highest gold carat that Dennison produced thus making them more desirable). Correctly numbered; 348028 12 - the 12 is the Dennison date numbering system; 1912 which shows the movement is original to the case - it should always be dated earlier or the same, never after. Again carries an old service mark which is neatly placed just inside the case circumference. Movement;- The stem wound and set high grade 17 ruby jewelled Waltham 'ROYAL' steel plate lever movement (which still retains the original steel movement/dust ring) is in superb clean and bright order (micro bit of patina showing under eyeglass only to the mainspring barrel cover) and as mentioned above has just been checked/serviced by my highly experienced watch maker. Carries the most wonderful bright 'fishscale' engine turning to the top plates with frosted 'lace' engine turning around the circumference - the detail of which remains as crisp and clear today as the day they were made. Has a compensated bi-metal balance wheel with red gold balance screws and four red gold meantime screws (for precision timing), bright blued steel overcoil balance spring which is true, in the round and 'breathing' well, red gold centre wheel, large ruby jewels in red gold sunken chaton settings, diamond end stone, ruby pallet jewels, red gold regulator star wheel (again for precision timing), attractive 'swirl' engine turning to the mainspring and ratchet barrel covers and original matching steel case screws. Stamped clearly on the top plates in bold arched black Gothic enamel script; A.W.W.Co. WALTHAM, MASS. ROYAL 17 JEWELS ADJUSTED (for time and position) and is numbered in black script; 16193337 - dating her to 1908. Balance action is absolutely tremendous in all positions (could not be any better) and is keeping excellent time with a sure, strong positive action - runs like a train. Winds extremely smoothly and fully (do not be afraid to fully wind, over-winding is the greatest horological myth!) Hand set operates smoothly and correctly - the pull up/push down action is very firm and true. Lovely original large totally un-worn rose gold 'onion' crown and original Dennison safety bow (tiny bit of wear to top underside from being proudly carried on a watch chain over the years) which is correctly stamped; DQ - Dennison Quality. Appraisal;- A very handsome and highly impressive Gentleman's American timepiece which as mentioned earlier was much loved and cared for by the original owner - she will make a perfect gift and a heirloom to be enjoyed by your future generations! Ready to wear or display. Will be delivered in a new presentation box and be very securely and safely packed.
